I started my day without technology by waking up early and playing my guitar. It was a nice way to start off my day, because I usually start it off with checking my phone or watching tv.
After I played guitar I sketched a little bit. I didn't miss my phone at all at this point, and it actually felt nice to not worry about my phone.
Later that morning my family came and picked me up. They live in Wilmington and were visiting for the weekend, so I figured this would be a good time to put away technology so I could spend quality time with them.
We started the day by going to Mystery Hill, because none of us had been before. While it was cheesy, I had a lot of fun being with my family.
After Mystery Hill, we went to lunch and Our Daily Bread. I found this experience to be a really good one. My family is usually the type to sit on their phones while waiting for a meal, but instead of doing that, my family put their phones away and we had really good conversation.
Later that day we went to blowing rock and walked around. There was a candle shop that had a man making candles. I watched him make them and we talked about how he made them.
Later that night we went to a Jason Isbell concert. Going to this concert without my cell phone was really nice. I found that I focused on the music more than I would if I had it. If I had my cell phone I would probably focus more on taking pictures and texts.
After the show we went to dinner, and this was the first time in the day that I missed my phone. My family was on their phones, and just sitting there without mine made me wonder who had texted me, what was happening on facebook, and things like that.
When I got back to my room, I was tempted to turn my phone back on, but I didn't. Instead I decided to paint for a little bit and I found this to be much more fulfilling than being on my phone.
Before going to sleep, I usually watch TV or check my phone. Instead of that, I decided to read until I was tired. This was a really nice change, and I got tired faster than I normally would. I also found that I slept better than I usually did,
Overall, I found this day without technology to be successful. It was nice to not focus on technology for a day and just spend quality time with my family.
